We need at least two hours to walk from Kande where we left the jeep and Hushe, the start of the trek.
Wind is blowing, lifting up the dust behind our paces, the road is a pist. Harry isn’t too well and has to run behind big rocks to squat. He is carrying a pretty heavy bagpack and will get a porter in Hushe for our ascent to Humbrok. I will still carry on mine which isn’t that heavy (I am not the one having the tent, the food, the extra stove etc… Sometimes it is good to be a girl here !)
Then in Hushe, we are greatly welcomed by the villagers, all standing next to some shops. I take loads of pictures. Harry is looking for a porter and I relax my legs. The elders got profond wrinkles and an easy smile, children are mumuring to each other while looking at us and accept happily to be taken pictures of. A shop is opening and this seems to be the afternoon’s activity here. Everyone comes to sell some dry fruits, buy cheekpeas or just look what is happening. There are people sitting on their rooftop, goats running around not far away and everyone is covered with dust. Hair are in a mess, clothes get a brownish color and the faces catch the dust like if they were wearing blush.
In no time, a porter is found, his name is Ali and will guide us on the steep walk up to Humbrok. Even though my bag isn’t so heavy, it is pretty hard! It is a 630m ascent to reach the meadows which are welcoming shepards in summertime. There are some empty shelters, done out of stones and with really small doors. Ali disapears quickly to find the best spot to spend the night while we are freezing out there. Clouds are covering the sky..
Obviously, beasts and men are sharing the same home when there are here. Some rest of shits are found here and there but they are gonna be useful to maintain the fire. And fire we want as the sky is covered and coldness is defintily there ! Now my stomack is also in pain and when I go to wash my hand in the river, I see ice on it at some parts. The water is freezing and it will take me a while to warm my hands up again. So are we sitting in a dwarf shelter (you can’t stand up properly inside). There is gear to make fire and Ali gets busy. He put so much dry shits on the flames that a thick smoke emanates for a long time. We will even need to open the door to breathe again. But well, it keeps warm and that is dam nice Not so much food tonight, I don’t feel so good. Maybe the altitude smashes me down as well.
Awake we are early morning to climb up to the view point which should allow us to see the K-2’s peak, goal of this expedition. The sky is almost clear and we keep good hope. We go through a walk on a narrow path, bushes are found here and there and finally a proper climb between the rocks to reach a flat area. We now hope that the numerous clouds which just came in no time will soon disappear…
QUE NENNI ! NADA, NIET, Instead, we are taken in a sort of a totally unexpected blizzard!
Tchao the K-2! I have only one desire now : go back down to the shit’s smoky, dwarf hut, to be next to the fire !
After a careful walk down, Ali is out, waiting for us. We warm us a bit by the fire before going back down. It is gonna be fast as the wind is getting into the valley and pushes us. Then we reach the red, green and yellow trees and the dangling berry branches. Snow seems to be far away but the wind will rise up more by the afternoon.
Ali welcomes us at home for a chai. He goes out during the meantime to prepare the jeep which will drive us back to Kunde. We briefly see the ladies of the family. They are in the kitchen and send the little girl in the room where we are sitting, to bring us a tray with biscuits. We stay there for a long time waiting for Ali to return. There must be a problem with the jeep we think after a while… We go out to check and indeed, the jeep doesn’t start anymore. There is a bunch of men at the back of it, pulling a rope to take the jeep up the slope. With some impulse, it might maybe starts. One, two, three tries… Everyone is helping. Some are stucking a stone under the wheels to stop the car after every push. Some others are pulling as hard as they can, with all their weight. Finally, success, the jeep is bouncing along. We run to pick up our bags, loads of people will enjoy the ride too and jump in the jeep, there is not much traffic on that road…
We pick up the jeep at Kunde and here are we on the road again, driving down the mountain while listening this time to Rage Against the Machine.
